Director of Teaching & LearningFull-time Position Beginning
Summer 2025PS1 Pluralistic School is a small (200 students),
independent elementary school serving grades K-6, located in the
heart of Santa Monica. Established in 1971, PS1 is founded on the
belief that a community is enriched when individual differences are
respected, honored, and welcomed. We seek a dynamic individual with
extensive experience in elementary education as both a teacher and
a coach/administrator. This person is an integral member of our
Senior Administrative team and our LEARN team, providing
educational leadership in the areas of curricular and program
development. The Director of Teaching and Learning plays an
essential role in the development and rollout of new commitments
and initiatives tied to our strategic plan. This is a year-round
position, functioning as a thought partner and reporting directly
to the Head of School.Major duties and responsibilities include the
following:
- Serve as both a leader and member in the building of a
collaborative, interactive team of teaching and learning
professionals.
- Provide guidance and leadership in the formation and
implementation of the academic and social-emotional curriculum and
programs on campus and in the student and faculty assessment
process.
- Serve as the curricular leader in the school, conducting
regular meetings with faculty to engage in the collaborative
planning and ongoing learning needed to be at the forefront of
pluralistic and progressive education.
- Serve as a vital communication link between and among faculty
and administration. In addition to faculty and specialists, this
person also supervises and leads the LEARN Team, consisting also of
the full-time Child Development and Literacy and Math Learning
Specialists.
- Serve as administrative liaison between faculty and parents in
matters relating to a student's progress.
- Be a strong active presence in all classrooms as an observer, a
supporter, a teacher, a facilitator, and a co-worker. Encourage and
support all faculty in their pursuit of excellence in education and
their own professional growth, while also fostering their own
unique lens and passions.
- Observe, supervise, and evaluate faculty to assure shared
goals, outcomes, scope and sequence, objectives, benchmarks, and
continuity of skills and values in accordance with the school's
mission and vision.
- Support faculty professional development, visits to other
classrooms and other schools, and school community curricular
events. Help with traditions and new initiatives within classrooms,
clusters, and school.The position requires excellent communication
and leadership skills, expertise in curriculum design and
implementation, prior experience in school administration, and
knowledge of, and personal preference for, principles of
progressive education. Salary and benefits are competitive. The
salary range is $145k-$175k, depending on experience. EOE. For more
